Artwork: Project 2
14Title: Home
Size: 46cm x 31cm Medium: Oil pastel on paper Completion: September 2019 Exhibition Text : Home is based on our environment. I believe each of us has the responsibility to take good care of our home because this is the only home that we will ever have. We should treat our environment the way it treats us. It also portrayed how I was raised back in Burma (Myanmar). I was inspired by Starry Night and Wheat Field with Cypresses painted by Vincent van Gogh. Oil pastel was used to create this piece. |
Planning
Inspiration
Gogh, Vincent van. Starry Night. Oil on canvas. Web. 23 Sep. 2019.
My first inspiration was Starry Night created by Vincent van Gogh. I was in-loved with the brush strokes. The whole effect is dreamlike because of the swirling sky, and movement of a dab of color rolling with the clouds around the stars and moon. This painting inspired me to use oil pastels for my painting to create objects with lots of dab of color. I wanted my piece to affect dreamlike reality. I should use complementary colors, any two colors opposite each other on the color wheel, to create high contrast. This can be used to make something stand out. I had an idea of creating a cityscape. Another thing I like about this piece is the emotions or feelings that you get just by looking at the piece. I think it is achieved through the use of colors. Likewise, my piece will apply warm feelings or emotions effect because I want the audience to feel connected by nature.

Gogh, Vincent van. Wheat Field with Cypresses . Oil on canvas. Web. 23 Sep. 2019.
My second inspiration was Wheat Field with Cypresses created by Vincent van Gogh. I had an idea of creating a landscape because I wanted to show the beauty of nature. I believe that our environment is home to anyone. It is important to care for it because this is the only one we will ever have. My landscape will be based on my imagination of nature because I wanted to combine parts of nature that I like to create a whole. I loved how you can see movements of the trees, wheat and perhaps the clouds which makes it seems like the wind is blowing from right to left. This creates a dreamlike but yet a realistic piece. Maybe, I should do something like this for my piece, dreamlike-reality. Another thing I like about this artwork is the thick outlines of the objects which emphasize the movement, perhaps the movement of the wind. I will apply the use of analogous colors to my piece to achieve that realistic view.

Planning Sketches/ Experimentation/Techniques
The first sketch that I created was a landscape. I combined different colors to see what colors look good together or contrast. I thought this would help me to have a better idea for my final piece. I didn't really like this sketch because it is too solid and lacks details.
|
My second sketch was a cityscape. I didn't finish this sketch because I wanted to do something with nature. I tried to create this cityscape just to see if I like it or not.
|
My third sketch was a landscape. I decided to use this as a reference for my final piece. I somehow always ended up with a different product than my actual sketch because different ideas kept coming while creating my piece. So, I used my sketches as references.
|
I did a little bit of experiment with oil pastels. I applied different complementary colors to see if I should include them for my final piece. I also found out that it is messy to use oil pastel so it is important to use a clean paper to cover the part that I finished.
|
Process
First, I sketched an outline with a pencil. The pencil mark must be light because I don't want any visible pencil mark when I applied oil pastels over. I drew a landscape because of my love for our environment.
|
Second, I started coloring my left side of the paper such as the huge tree, and the fields with rice piling up. I used light brown, black and a little bit of white Pentel Oil Pastel for the trunk of the tree. Then, I applied dark green and light green for the leaves with a little bit of white for highlight. For the grass, I mixed light green and darker green with yellow. It is important to dab the colors to achieve this dreamlike effect.
|
Third, I applied light blue and darker blue with white for the sky. This took a lot of time because I had to dab every single color and made sure the small, short lines are in the right direction. I wish I could redo the sky because I could have done a swirling sky to exaggerate the sunny sky.
|
Fourth, I began to apply light brown, gray, white with yellow for the road. The yellow kinda blended out the colors to have a nice finishing touch. I used these colors to have a dry soil color. One thing I love about Oil Pastels Colors is that they create texture but also can blend well to make it smooth.
|
Fifth, I applied white, darker blue and light blue to create the pond. I added grasses around the bank. On the surface of the water, there are flowers. To create this flower, I used red, purple, pink and a little bit of yellow. I applied black for contour which creates values to the piece.
|
Sixth, I mixed orange and yellow for the rice fields. I applied dark green, lighter green, and yellow for the flower field. I combined green with red and yellow with purple because they are complementary colors. I think this flower field is one favorite part because it is very appealing to my eyes. For the rest of the trees, I just applied dark green and lighter green for the leaves with a little bit of yellow for highlight. I added black to create shadows.

Reflection
Critique
Overall, I think I did well because I get a clam, relaxing and beauty of nature vibe from my piece which I aimed for. My favorite part is the flower field which is on my right side of the piece because I applied complementary colors which created contrast. I also like the pond with the flowers on the surface. There are many challenges during the process. One challenge would be not having a specific color that I want so I would combine different colors to achieve that color. For example, I wanted a dark green but the color that I had was not dark enough. So, I blended with black to create a dark shade. One thing that I learned about using oil pastels was that it is important to color lightly first to blend well. One thing I would change about this piece would be the sky because I feel like it is too bold or in one solid color. I would create movement by creating clouds that swirl to give a dreamlike effect.
