Artwork: Summer Project #1
Title: Imaginary
Size: 61cm x 61cm Medium: Acrylic on canvas Completion: July 2019 Exhibition Text Imaginary was created based on my imagination of nature. I was inspired by San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk, 1908 by Claude Monet and abstract painting #0453 by Suraj Patel. This piece was mainly based on abstract art meaning that this does not try to represent an accurate image of a visual reality but instead use colors and shapes to accomplish its effects. |

Inspirations
Monet, Claude. San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk. Oil on canvas. Web. 5 Aug. 2019
I was inspired by San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk, 1908 by Claude Monet. I first saw this masterpiece in my art history class and I was amazed by the mixture of colors to create a sunset vibe. I am not quite sure what the big object is, but I am assuming it could be a city or some type of buildings. I love how the audience can assume that unknowable object as whatever they see or want. I want to apply different perspective in my piece meaning the audience could create their image. I was inspired to paint a sunset just like this piece to capture a warmth, clam, and pleasure feelings that nature could provide.

Patel, Suraj. #0453. Web. 5 Aug. 2019
I was also inspired by abstract painting #0453 by Suraj Patel. This is an abstract landscape painting. I loved how simple and fewer colors are used to create this piece. I wanted to create two landscape pieces using only two or three different colors. As I was watching him painting this on his YouTube channel, I started to realize how using fewer colors could create an amazing scene. Then, I came up with an idea of creating four small pieces of paintings of nature. Suraj Patel uses a palette knife and a fan brush to create most of his artworks. So, I was encouraged to experience these tools to create my piece.

Planning Sketches / Experimentation and Techniques
Before I start painting, I did some sketches and experimentation. I sketched a landscape and a sunset. I love nature because of its beauty, colors, and feelings that it provides. It was challenging to fully lay my idea onto the paper just by using black and white. So, I decided to use watercolor just to see what my imagination would look like. However, I decided to use only acrylic paints to create this piece. I used a palette knife since it is nice to create abstract arts. I did a little bit of experimentation on the palette knife because this was my first time using it. I found out that it is nice for creating textures and interesting mixer colors.

Process
1. First, I created a canvas using wooden stretchers to create the frame. Next, stapled the corners with a manual staple gun and secure them with a hammer. Then, I added the canvas and cut the extra edges to the frame. After that, I applied one layer of thick gesso to the canvas and let it dry. I repeated these steps to create four canvases for this piece.
|
2. The first painting that I did was a mixture of the light pink and dark purple landscape. First, I applied a light pink color, mixing red and white, and dark purple, mixing blue and red for the base. I kind of just blended them out with a palette knife. I loved the uneven textures and interesting colors that a palette knife created. Next, I painted pine trees using the same colors as the base with a fan brush but applied the color white to the stems to make the trees look more realistic. I thought adding the color white gives a sense of reflections.
|
3. The second piece was very similar to the first one. All the process to create this piece was the same as well. However, the colors blue and white are applied to create this beautiful, clam, and winter vibe landscape.
|
4.The third painting was sunset. I used a palette knife to blinded the base color which was red, orange, yellow, light blue, and dark blue. These colors were not nicely bland, but created textures. I spread different colors on top of the base to emphasized the reflection of the sky or the sunset.
|
5. The fourth piece that I painted was a flowers field. First, I applied a good amount of dark green and brown colors to the canvas as a base color and blended them out with a palette knife. I wanted the colors to create uneven textures to create depth. I drew lines using the tip of a palette knife to create leaves kind of like grass. Next, I crumbled a small piece of paper, applied paints and dipped them to the canvas to create flowers.
Reflection
Critique
I had lots of fun painting this piece because I currently have an interest in abstract arts. This kind of piece is something that I always wanted to create. I am very happy with the result because I felt like I captured the feelings that these images could create. There were many challenges during the process. One example would be blending the colors because the palette knife that I used was not straight enough. However, I ended up loving the uneven layers of paints that create textures and an interesting mixture of colors. Also, I thought using fewer colors would make the artwork boring because I grew up with a mindset of the more the colors, the more interesting it would be. I was wrong when I saw the result of this piece because I found out how interesting and a clam I was when I look at the blue and white landscape. If I had a chance to do this project over again, I would paint the same landscape for each squares using a different value of colors.
