Title: Sister's Love
Size: 36cm x 30cm Medium: Faber-Castell Color Pencils Completion: March 1, 2019 Exhibition Text Sister’s Love is about an older sister helping her younger sister put on her shoes. It is very important in my family to take care of each other. The job of the eldest child is to help younger siblings. The purpose of this piece is to show the love that siblings have for each other. I was inspired by the Good Housekeeping Cover and The Pink Bonnet created by Jessie Wilcox Smith. Faber-Castell color pencils were used to produce this artwork. |

My first inspiration was Good Housekeeping Cover in 1922 create by Jessie Willcox Smith. In this artwork, a mother is helping her daughter to get reading. You can feel the positive feeling by the use of bright warm colors. There is a light coming from the window behind them. I loved this piece because I feel like this piece is about a mother helping her daughter to put her buttons. You can create your own story or theme just by looking at her work. I wanted my audience to create their own story just by looking at my piece. Additionally, instead of using colors to create a mood, the actions of the characters just us their facial expression, their positions, and movement will tell the theme or meaning of my piece. This piece inspired me to create a piece about an older sister helping her younger sister. I think this is a simple and positive piece.

My second inspiration was The Pink Bonnet created by Jessie Willcox Smith. In this piece, a mother is helping her daughter tying her pink bonnet. Just like my first inspiration, you can create your own story just by looking at this piece. Even though the mother's dress is dark, the little girl's pink dress and her face light the image to have a positive mood. This piece inspired me to use my sisters for my piece. I wanted my six years old sister to help my four years old sister to put on her shoe. I wanted my audience to create their own story just by looking at my artwork. Both of my inspirations are taking place in the house, so it would be nice to do the same. |

Planning Sketches , Experimentation and Techniques
I dressed up my younger sisters for a picture for this piece. Since drawing a big picture is not my strongest, I took a picture of my sisters. I used this as my inference. I thought this will be easier for me to transfer this image to the illustration board.
|
I did some swatches of colors to see what fits the image. I also labeled them with their numbers to recognize what colors they are. Doing swatches is very helpful to see what the color really looks . like on a paper.
|
I did an experiment of the skin tones. It was not easy because I could not create the exact skin tone that I want. This was due to the lack of color pencils.
|
Process
First, I measured the drawing board. It was 14in by 11in. I used a ruler to draw the grids. This way I can focus on each square at a time without getting overwhelmed by the whole image.
Fourth, I began to color a girl in the right corner. Cadmium orange, rose carmine, and white is applied for her skin tone. A little bit of black and raw umber are applied for contour and white for the highlight. Black is used to coloring the hair. Some parts of the hair are lighter and some are darker according to the value of the light. Deep scarlet red and deep red are applied to the flowers of her dress. Warm gray II and black are used to contour the dress and white to highlight the reflection of the light.
|
Second, I measured the image that I will be using for this piece. I created the same amount of squares to match with the illustration board.
Fifth, I began to color a girl who is sitting on a chair. Cadmium orange, rose carmine, and white is applied for her skin tone. A little bit of black and raw umber are applied for contour and white for the highlight. Then, I moved on to her dress. Light ultramarine is applied for highlight and applied ultramarine for contour. These two colors balanced out the value of how the light from the window reflects on her dress. Next, warm gray II and black are used to the other parts of her dress for details.
|
Third, I began to draw the image. I started with a girl on the right corner, a girl sitting on a chair, a chair, and the floor. I added flowers to this piece because I wanted to create a story through this image.
Sixth, dark phthalo green is applied to carpet and create shadows using black around the girls.
Seventh, I began to color the wall or the background with raw umber and walnut brown. Then, the image is finally complete.

Reflection
Critique
This was my second time drawing a large image on illustration board. I enjoyed working on this project because I discovered some skills that I never knew I had. I find this piece easier to draw because I learned how to blend, control the movement of my hand, and the color choice from my first illustration. There are many challenges as well during this process. This process consumed a lot of time because the blending has to nicely blend, I twisted some parts of the image, and drawing the facial features are very difficult. So, I focused on blending nicely to make the features more realistic. Another challenge I faced was creating a skin tone. This is because of the lack of color pencils. However, I combined different colors and experimented about nine skin tone and chose it for the final piece. If I were to do this project again, I will practice more on drawing facial expression and body features. This is because I do not have enough skills to draw basic body features. Overall, this is successful because I think the meaning behind this piece is very direct and clear to notice. When the audience looks at this, I think they will be able to tell it is about an older sister helping her younger sister.
