Title: Fight With A Smile
Size: 21cm x 23cm Medium: Ink and color pencil Completion: March 25, 2019 Exhibition Text Life is challenging, however, there is always some kind of a way to deal with the situations. Everything that I went through, currently fighting for, and moving towards something is what makes my life meaningful. In life, I sometimes faced black and white, but I fought with colors. This is inspired by Untitled by Pablo Jurado Ruiz and A Sunday on La Grande Jatte created by Georges Seurat. This artwork is stippling with ink and colors on paper. |

Inspirations

My first inspiration is Untitled created by Pablo Jurado Ruiz. He is a stippling artist and his work presented by portraits of great expressiveness and highly detailed. Most of his works are portraits of children because he believed children face flawlessly express what he as an artist wants to convey. His concept focuses on human expression.
His artworks amazed me with their fine details and realistic portraits. I was inspired to use a stippling method for my artwork. I think it is interesting and amazing to create a piece with thousands of small dots. Additionally, I wanted to capture my facial expression when facing challenges in my life. So, for my artwork, I will create a self-portrait using the stippling technique. |
My second inspiration was A Sunday on La Grande Jatte painted by Georges Seurat. This painting took more than two years to complete and is made up of millions of dots. Georges Seurat is known as the father of pointillism. I think this is an amazing painting because of how everything seems to blend out nicely, and the fact that this is a painting of million dots. I was inspired to use color ink to create my artwork. I have done the stippling technique with a black sharpie, however, I think this project is a great opportunity for me to use colors. I will be using colors such as red, light and dark blue, orange, and blue to my work. |

Planning Sketches / Experimentation and Techniques
For my piece, I wanted to use the technique that I learned from my freshman year. I planned to use the stippling method. I did an experiment of combing different colors using in to see if they banded. I noticed that this will take a long time to complete this project.
|
This is a self-portrait that I created during my freshman year. Since I am familiar with the stippling technique, I think this is a great opportunity to use something that I learned.
|
I always need a reference for my artworks. This is because drawing and sketching are not my strongest. So I need a technique that I can use for this project. So, I took pictures and use it as my reference. I planned to trace the outline and then fill it with inks.
|
Process
First, I printed the picture that I took for my reference and lightly traced the outline on a white drawing paper. It is important to trace lightly because I do not want any pencil marks to be visible through the ink.
Third, I focused on the face. I wanted to capture every lines and shadow on my face because this is a way to capture my expression. I was really careful to lightly put the dots because it is easy to let the ink soak on the paper. I used black ink for my skin tone to represents the challenges that I faced in my life. The smile on my face shows how strong and capable I am to deal with the situations.
|
Second, I started stippling the center of my shirt because I was so excited to use different colors of ink. Then, I was annoyed to repeat the same thing, so I moved on to the hair and the eyebrows. I can relate to Pablo J. Ruiz and Georges Seurat in a sense that stippling takes time and patience.
Fourth, I continued to color the shirt and went over some parts to create a darker value of colors. The more layer I create, the darker the color. I also applied a darker shade to the hair because of the reflection of the light. The light comes from the left side of the image and creates darker hues to the right.
|
This is just an image of a finished figure. I made sure to look over and see what I missed. I chose the shirt to be colorful because there are many happy moments in my life even though life is tough. There will always be good and bad times in life. I just have to know how to deal with the bad ones.
|
At last but not least, I applied a grass green background to represent growth. I believed everything happens for reasons. So, everything that I face in life is lessons and knowledge. I am the impact of my past. Additionally, this is the final artwork.

Reflection
Critique
I am pleased with my final product of this piece because it came out the way how I have imagined. This is my second time applying the stippling technique to create an artwork. All the experiments and practices helped to have a better understanding of this method. There are many successes and challenges during the process. The main challenge that I faced is time. Stippling takes a lot of time and my right hand hurt a lot. I also got bored and annoyed by the fact that I have been doing the same thing repeatedly. To overcome these challenges, I started to work and then take a rest and repeat that pattern until I finish this project. I know I need to rest my hand in order to work efficiently. Overall, this is successful because the contrast between black and white ink capture the emotion and the facial expression of the figure. I am happy with the final product.
